SUMMARY:Dr Jason Birch: Premodern Yoga- Texts and Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Share this:In a more in depth look into the history and philosophy of yoga\, Jason Birch\, doctor in Oriental Studies from Oxford University will share the most current research and its correlation to modern lifestyle. \nThis course will assume that students have a basic understanding of the history of yoga and its most well-known texts\, such as the Yogasūtra\, Bhagavadgītā\, Haṭhapradīpikā\, etc. \nIt will present an overview of how religious traditions\, such as Śaivism and Vaiṣṇavism\, have produced types of yoga that are related but different\, and how philosophical traditions\, such as Advaitavedānta\, have reinterpreted yoga in their own way. \nSeveral lectures will examine more closely the Pātañjalayogaśāstra and the Haṭhapradīpikā\, with a view to explaining the salient features of these yogas. \nThe most important Sanskrit terminology of these works will be discussed\, thus providing a basic introduction to the language.
