SUMMARY:Mark Singleton: 2013 TOKYO Workshops and Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Share this:Mark Singleton Ph.D\, author of “Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice” will be visiting Tokyo for the first time to offer a wide range of immersions\, lecture and workshops. \nMorning Practice Immersion\n September 30 – October 4\, 06:30-08:00 \nUsing the Body as a Tool for Meditation \nOver the course of five morning practices\, we will explore how we can use the body to rapidly access deeper states of meditation and concentration\, using asana and various techniques from the classical yoga traditions such as mudra\, bandha\, pranayama\, dharana and dhyana. \nExperienced Practitioner Immersion\n October 1 & 2\, 13:45-16:45 \nMudras: Theory and Practice\n October 1\, 13:45-16:45 \nIn this immersion we will explore Mudras\, which are the capstone of Hatha practice – without them\, the prana that is raised by other practices like asana and pranayama cannot be contained\, distributed and properly used. As well as traditionally being the gateway to immortality\, mudras also have immediate and tangible benefits for the body and mind. \nBuilding a Complete Sadhana: Theory and Practice\n October 2\, 13:45-16:45 \nHow do you construct a practice? What is a complete sadhana? In this immersion we will consider the elements of yoga practice that are available to us in the various yoga traditions and explore how we might use them in a practice session. This will include the use of asana\, pranayama\, mudra\, bandha\, chanting\, as well as various yogic meditation techniques. \nYoga Philosophy Lectures\n October 3 & 4\, 18:45-20:45 \nModern Yoga and Postures: Slide Show and Lecture based on Yoga Body\n October 3\, 18:45-20:45 \nIn this talk and slide show\, we will consider some of the ways that modern yoga has diverged from “traditional” yoga. Many elements from outside the Indian yoga traditions have informed modern our modern practices\, including modern science\, psychology and physical culture. What difference does this make to how we think about our practice? \nHatha Yoga: Slide Show and Lecture\n October 4\, 18:45-20:45 \nIn this talk we will examine the history\, philosophy and contexts of Indian hatha yoga\, on which many modern practices are based. Looking deeply into the roots of yoga\, we find inspiration and ideas for the development of our own practice. \nWeekend Workshop\n October 5 & 6\, 08:00-10:30 \nIt’s not about the Postures\n October 5\, 08:00-10:30 \nAsana is a fantastic entry point into yoga\, but there is much more to explore. The wider traditions of yoga can provide inspiration and sustenance for a lifetime of practice. During this workshop we will immerse ourselves in single pointed practice of tools such as mudra and mantra to deepen our experience of yoga. The goal will be to create a “retreat” situation where the deeper states of pratyahara and dharana can spontaneously manifest. \nBreath and Voice in Yoga Practice\n October 6\, 08:00-10:30 \nThe breath and the voice provide an accessible gateway to meditational states. In this workshop\, we will work with the sounded breath as part of a hatha yoga practice\, using Sanskrit mantras and chants to deepen the experience of absorption\, relaxation and awareness.
