Yoga offers a remedy for the reconstruction of our personality. Withdraw the senses from their objective and go within to the middle chamber, the subconscious of psychology. -Swami Satyananda Saraswati

During this 6 week course we will explore the systematic approach of Satyananda Yoga as taught by the Bihar School of Yoga in Northern India.

Course Curriculum

Session 1 - Introduction / Pranayama - Full Yogic Breathing

What makes Satyananda Yoga an evolving yoga? Today we will be introduced to Satyananda Yoga (also known as Bihar Yoga). We will learn more about the history and lineage of what makes this yoga progressive and inspiring.

Full Yogic Breathing

More and more workshops and seminars emphasize the importance of Pranayama in our daily practice. However, unless we learn to integrate natural abdominal breathing into our lives many of these pranayama exercises can actually be harmful to our health physically and psychologically.

On this day we will explore Abdominal Breathing a yogic breathing technique that will help you build a foundation in which stronger pranayama practices can be fully and properly integrated.

Session 2 - Asana - Pawanmuktanasana / Surya Namaskara

Pawanmuktanasana Series Part One

This series of asanas specific to Bihar School of Yoga are the fundamental practices prior to performing a more advanced asana program. This series releases the flow of prana or energy in the body and will prevent blockages from occurring in the body and mind. The poses are extremely subtle and require complete concentration and awareness.

Surya Namaskara

“By awakening our inherent solar forces through this integrated practice, we can attune ourselves to the cosmic nature and revitalize our lives.” -Swami Satyananda Saraswati

We will explore Surya Namaskara as a practice that awakens the solar aspects of our nature and releases our vital energy for the development of higher awareness. We will delve into the psychic centers and sun mantras for each posture.

Session 3 - Meditation - Trataka / Antar Mouna

Trataka

Trataka is a tantric meditation technique that enhances control over the senses (pratyahara). It increases awareness of our internal environment and external expression to allow for deeper integration. Trataka unlocks the inherent energy of the mind and channelizes it to the dormant areas of the unconscious.

Antar Mouna (Inner Silence)

Antar Mouna is a pratyahara practice, a tantric meditation practice that focuses on transforming the dualistic nature of the mind. It seeks to find a balance between the oscillation and the extrication, between suppression and expression of our mental experience.

Session 4 - Yoga Nidra - Beginner

Yoga Nidra is slowly gaining popularity throughout the yoga world for its psychological and physiological benefits. Yoga Nidra restructures and transforms the entire personality through conscious body, mind and spirit awareness and relaxation. Each session of Yoga Nidra allows us to burn old habits, tendencies and past conditionings in order to make room for a new experience.

In this session we will delve into the theory surrounding Yoga Nidra and explore a beginner practice.

Session 5 - Yoga Nidra - Intermediate

This session will include further inquiry into Yoga Nidra where we will practice a more advanced session including sensations and visualizations.

Session 6 - Full Satyananda Class

We will combine all elements of the course to practice a complete Satyananda Yoga class.
