This workshop will prepare beginner students to attend YogaJaya level 1 to 3 led public classes.

Module 1: The Basics
Saturday August 18, 2007. 8:00-10:00

This session will begin with background information on the Ashtanga vinyasa system, as well as an introduction to Ujjayi breathing. We will work our way through the first two sun salutations (Surya Namaskara A and B) and then move on to an in-depth examination of the 11 fundamental asanas that form the foundation for all the subsequent sequences in the Ashtanga system.

Module 2: Building on the Basics
Sunday August 19, 2007. 8:00-10:00

After a warm-up built around the asanas learned in Module 1, we will focus on the standing postures and the first half of the seated asanas that make up the primary series. Asana by asana, we will explore each pose in depth and discuss modifications for a gentler practice. Finally, we will look briefly at backbends and the asanas that comprise the finishing sequence.

Module 3: Putting it All Together
Saturday August 25, 2007. 8:00-10:00

In the final session, we will review the asanas from the first two classes and then continue with a playful study of some of the more challenging seated asanas remaining in the primary series. Backbending will be explored a bit more deeply as well as variations and modifications for headstands that will build strength and stability, and we will conclude with a Q&A session.
