Applied Anatomy & Physiology Modules
July 17, 18, 20, 21
Module 1: Structural Stability Freedom and Focus
July 17th, 14:00-17:30
In this practical workshop, advanced yoga teacher and lecturer Simon Borg-Olivier MScBAppSc(Physiotherapy), simply explains how to practice yoga in a way that allows you to bring a type of core stabilization to the nine main joint complexes (ankles, knees, hips, waist, chest, neck, shoulders, elbows and wrists). You will be shown 18 internal locks (bandhas) created through muscle co-activation that move energy through your body while developing strength and stability. Simon explains that in approaching yoga and life it is more important to be flexible in your mind than in your body. He will also lead you through an effective and flowing yoga sequence that can automatically create bandhas throughout your body that develop strength without feeling tense, increase flexibility without feeling like you are stretching, give you energy rather than exhaust you, and put these principles into action without having to over-think.
Module 2: Firm but calm … 'Sthira Sukham Asanam"
July 18th, 14:00-17:30
In this workshop, Simon Borg-Olivier, a research scientist and physiotherapist who has practiced yoga for 40 years, shows ways to free up your spine, energize and strengthen the body while remaining calm. Simon teaches how to move your entire spine naturally in order to activate key energy centers for health and vitality. This also gives stability and nourishment to your joints and muscles, preventing and healing injuries, and relieving physical pain.Techniques taught in this workshop help improve the digestion of food, absorption of nutrients, elimination of waste and stored toxins, and the health of the reproductive system. Simon will also lead you through a flowing yoga sequence that simply allow you achieve physical yoga as described by the Patanjali aphorism ‘Sthira sukham asana’ (posture and movement should be firm but calm).
Module 3: Internal Relaxation Power
July 20th, 15:00-17:30
In this practical workshop, Simon Borg-Olivier, a research scientist and physiotherapist who has practiced yoga for 40 years, will teach posture and breathing techniques that simultaneously generate increased physical power with a peaceful and relaxed inner state. This practice brings you to a calm and happy state by using enhanced diaphragmatic breathing into an abdomen firmed through posture. Practical application of these principles in everyday life can help you develop strength and fitness, stabilize and nourish your joints and muscles, prevent and heal injuries, and relieve physical and emotional pain. Simon will also lead you though a flowing sequence of postures that helps to improve circulation and allow your muscles, joints and internal organs to function at their optimum health.
Module 4: Reflex Body… Reflex Mind
July 21st, 08:30-11:00
In this practical workshop, Simon Borg-Olivier MScBAppSc(Physiotherapy) will teach techniques than can help you move more freely in everyday life. When you are in yoga it should not feel like you are stretching, it should feel like you simply moving in a natural way. When you understand how to free your body using natural reflexes you adopt a relaxed and flexible approach to your yoga, your exercise and your life, which promotes relaxed flexible thinking and a 'reflex mind'. Appropriate natural movement can rejuvenate you by improving circulation while simultaneously inducing relaxation of nerves and muscles, thus reducing your need for sleep and food. These techniques can also be very useful in the relief of pain in any part of the body. Simon will also lead you through a flowing meditative yoga sequence that can look very energetic and strong from the outside but is actually very nurturing, builds energy rather than wasting energy, and having the same effect as healing sleep and food.
